  • Update on the Dump

A while back I posted about a walk that included exploring the old dump at the end of my street. Just a short distance from the extinct Universal Rundle toilet factory, I found what I surmised to be defectives that had been discarded. Later, when I took Mike out to share the joy, he suggested that they were more likely the castings. Since some of you (well one of you, anyway) had expressed interest, I took the opportunity to take some pictures. Here they are:

This is a pile of decomposing toilet castings. The following is an old cot from the Bracero labor camp.

Mike and Molly confer about the origins of some of the more obscure items they found in dump/flood control levy.

This is what the wash looks like where it hasn't been rearranged by men.

This is what's left of the old road.

    Happy trails!

  • Very interesting. Nature when left alone is quite efficient in reclaiming earth and reducing human impact. Right now nature is working hard to reclaim my driveway - the weeds are coming up in all the cracks and slowly breaking the pavement. It was pretty hard to shovel the snow this last winter... a new driveway is in my future!

    • We fight weeds in the winter while you do battle in the summer. Maybe we would be better off just embracing the weeds and calling them flowers or herbs.

  • The desert really is quite beautiful where it hasn't been trashed by man!

    • It is beautiful, especially in the spring. Things are drying up fast now and turning brown. All we can hope is that everyone is super careful not to start wild fires. We're already seeing bad air quality from the fires to the west and north of us.

  • I'm surprised the castings decompose but I suppose it takes a long time.

    Some beautiful pictures here though.
