Thanks to the Federal Government the wolves are being kept from the door for 13 more weeks. One good thing about losing your job in a depression is that you can collect unemployment for longer than the standard 6 months. The bad thing is, it's harder to find work in a depression.
When the unemployment runs out I guess I'll say I'm retired because it sounds better than, "I've been unemployed for over a year." That makes you sound like a big fat loser. Retired just makes you sound old.
Maybe I'll label myself self-employed. That sounds respectable enough. I'm an organic farmer. Yeah, that's it. Oh, maybe I could qualify for agricultural subsidies. Do you think they would pay me not to grow pot?
I tried that once when I was young and really stupid. Actually, it was my young and stupid husband's brilliant idea. The gophers got a kick out of his endeavors but he never got to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
I guess it's legal to grow a small number of plants for personal medicinal use here in California but I don't have any health problems so I guess I'll stick to squash for now.

When I saw a news story recently on the Emerald Triangle of California, I about had a heart attack. Everybody's growing pot legally. I grew up there in the 60's and hippies were moving in by the bus loads. My parents moved us away form there in 1970 and into southern Oregon where Hippies were also invading the almighty red neck outposts. haha
@ALL1Tribe - They're growing some amazing stuff up there these days, not the hemp we knew as kids. I don't understand why the government wastes so much money trying to supress it instead of legalizing and taxing it. Prohibition doesn't work; just ask the Kennedys.
haha. that reminds me of the show weeds! hilarious.
and yes, self-employed does sound better and dignified. =]
youre contemplating a life of crime, i know it! don't do it judy dont do it. i'm too young and impressionable to visit you in the clink!
You could grow your own food to help with the budget. Good luck for looking for another job
I totally agree with the legalization of that and prostitution (not that I am suggesting that we do either of them, I was speaking only of our government pimps and pushers). It would put us back in black, baby. Meanwhile, I have been thinking/wondering if I should go back to school or something. I am going to be homeless anyway, than I can just say I am a student. I still do not know what I want to be when I grow up...then I can view this ridiculous horrible stressful time as an opportunity. ha ha ha!
I think both of our entries are going to get sadder and sadder. Bleah! Yeah, not working is nice; being unemployed sucks ass!
On my first pass through this entry, it sounded like the gophers got to veggies, but on the second reading, it sounded like they enjoyed something else. Hmmmm... Gophers with the munchies can't be a good thing.
I wish I could be like you and use the "retired" euphemism too, and- uh... I- I'm not saying that- I mean, you're probably in better shape than I am, riding the ruts and all, so- yeah, and mountain biking is a young person's sport and you're obviously a young person, and...
I shut up now...
@englishjuls - I've been not only growing food for my family, I've been feeding the neighbors and selling the excess at the local roadside stand. Seems I have a green thumb
@kenwats - Don't you dare shut up! I count on you to make me lol at least once a day.
@queenie - I like the sound of student for occupation. It sounds hopeful and energetic. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to write memoirs for old folks who still remember.
@Pawleeen - Weeds! One of my two favorite shows: Weeds and Secret Diary of a Call Girl. There's another occupation that goes untaxed while we law abiding folks shoulder the bill.
@curtainsopen - Having you visit would almost make it worth going to prison. It would be like getting roses at work - makes all the other women jealous, you know. Could you leave the girl friend in the car?
I was on enemployment for a year and it only stoped cuz I ran out of money. I am all for the gov say yes to pot and making some money but then they did not ask me
I am going to try my hand at growing some food this spring now that I to am unable to find work.
I am sounding like a broken record by now (boy is that an dated term). But I bet if you send in a few of those blurbs you wrote on your biking experiences to a few biking magazines, I think that you would find employment quickly. Then you would be working from your home and truly could say you were self employed. Maybe lack of funds might just be the motivation you need to launch your free lance writing career. I have a picture I have hung in my office for years which served as my motivation. It shows a guy hitting a golfball out of a sandtrap. The caption below reads, "Out of difficulty lies opportunity".
@Tuesday928 - When you can't find work, we're all in trouble!!!
@zarnicki - I love you! You are so good for my self confidence.
@judyrutrider - so, are you saying that it's perfectly fine for me to call you "owed"? Heh heh heh...
@kenwats - The truth shall set you free, my son.
I thought a lot about banks of late,
what was the name of the guy that said "because that's where the money is"
@ElevenStones - Willie Sutton
squash won't give you the health problems you need! take up smoking and being obnoxious in queues. never lets me down!
Very interesting and glad you are healthy. I was born in South Africa and there they commonly grow Gem Squash. It is round and lime green when young and turns dark green when just smaller than a tennis ball. Later it turns yellow when it reaches the size of a base ball. At that stage the skin hardens and the flesh turns yellow as well. They can be eaten at any stage and I prefer them the size of a golf ball when they taste like baby corn. I have not had any for years now and I had no luck finding seeds either. Anyway, if you find any don't neglect them...
@MaartenVenter - Thanks for the tip. I've never met a squash that I didn't like so I'll go online to see if I can find them. Southern CA should be similar to South Africa in climate, I would think.
Maarten, are you of Dutch heritage? My maternal grandfather was from Friesland, Netherlands.
@judyrutrider - Yes, I am from Dutch heritage but I have neglected to do any research on it when it was still easy to do and I do not have any information about it. My paternal grandmother was a girl Maartens and a cousin of CJ Langenhoven the father of the Afrikaans language. He was also the composer of the South African National Anthem "Die Stem" which has now been incorporated as a verse into the new National Anthem.
Chew is bath shy, Vet shy and nail clipping shy but he is actually quite the camera hound.
I am sorry to learn you are touched by the unemplyment , Judy .
Times become really hard ;
The idea of self employment was not good some years ago but in France it is encouraged now .
Love
Michel
