The Envy Factor
Mike took me out for dinner tonight to celebrate my birthday (somewhat belatedly). I was delighted to have an opportunity to use the new purse that Jeri had given me for Christmas.
I'm not normally one to think much about hand bags, much less brand name bags, but I was blown away by this gift.
First, I was touched by the fact that she had remembered a casual comment that I had made during one of my visits when she was in the hospital. Jeri was hospitalized for 34 days, during which time she was in a great deal of pain. There were many days when I feared she wouldn't survive. Her daughter, Leigh, was at her bedside nearly every waking hour with only a few hours of relief when I would take her place. At some point, the nurses admired Leigh's nice Coach bag, which made me conscious of how bad mine looked, which prompted my observation of the condition of my own bag. It was under these troubled circumstances that these thoughtful women noted the comment that I had forgotten as soon as it passed my lips.
And then I was stunned by her generosity. Coach bags are lovely, well-made hand bags, priced well beyond my limited means. In fact, I'm almost afraid to carry it in public for fear of being mugged just for my bag! Just to be sure that the envy factor is exploited to the maximum, Coach adorns its bags with, not one, but TWO identifying tags,
and that's in addition to the chrome Coach logo, prominently placed on the outside of the bag.
The inside is as lovely as the outside, lined and pocketed in red satin.
So, now this country bumpkin has a stylish bag and no place to go to show it off. It hangs in my closet, in its own white satin bag, also stamped with the ubiquitous logo. And, as silly as it sounds, I take great pleasure in owning something that other women covet.

Well, Miss Country Bumpkin -- perhaps this is a cue to make another visit to the coast, where you could carry your bag to a nice luncheon at another favorite spot ~ ~ ~
@slmret - What a good idea! Of course, in your neck of the woods, it wouldn't even get a second glance
@judyrutrider - I'll be pretty involved in remodeling a kitchen until the end of February, but should have a lunchtime available in early March -- let's all look at that possibility ~ ~ ~
@slmret - I'll probably still be in the throes of my own remodeling project by then too.
Ooh -- a kitchen too? Or are you doing something more like Barb did?
@slmret - We raised the roof on the family room and replaced a wall. That entailed new windows, doors, can lights, wiring, floor, and roof. Then we will paint the outside, tear out and replace the cracked concrete in the patio, and replace the landscaping. All that is in preparation for remodeling the kitchen, which will probably happen when Mike gets back from WA next fall.
happy belated birthday
@godfatherofgreenbay - Thanks. It's great to be alive.
@judyrutrider - My goodness, that's huge. I'm doing kitchen, and maybe stairway flooring; later will do 3 bathrooms plus carpeting throughout.
This hand bag is for a queen and it goes well with you .
Happy birthday, Judy.
Love
Michel
I forgot the mini.
Oh Judy, I love your Coach bag. LOVE IT. It is so especially wonderful because it was a gift of love. And a gorgeous bag. GORGEOUS. I am a sucka for name brand bags.
Hangs in your closet like the suits I used to wear which are now in cleaning bags to keep from getting dusty....
@fauquet - I always love Michel's courtly comments. He is the epitome of a gentleman. Too bad he doesn't get comment notices; I always feel like I'm talking behind his back.
@queenie - I will put your name in it so that when I die, it goes to you
None of my cycling friends care about name brand unless it's on a mountain bike.
@zarnicki - Yeah, I have a rack of Ann Taylor suits too. Occasionally, I try them on to make sure they still fit. You never know what life holds...I may get a real job again someday.
@judyrutrider - How interesting. I was fashion forward even when I was getting muddy on a mountain. You are so sweet! AND I forgot to sa HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
RYC : I have appreciated your comment, Judy . You are right more I age and more I am attentive to the beauty or the meaning of the little things . You know, a simple drop of water of a pond viewed with a microscope is an univers with a crowd of living beings. Question of scale . .
Love
Michel
